What To Do If We Know Of A Case Of Domestic Violence?

There are symptoms that can be a call for help for people close to a victim of domestic violence. In order for you to identify them, in this article I mention some of them.

Unfortunately, intrafamily or domestic violence is a reality that we live with as a society every day, and in some cases it even results in the death of its victim.

Sadly, these events are far from isolated. However, many people seem to be unaware that this reality does not distinguish social class, sex or religion and that like any disease, it presents certain symptoms on the part of the person who is subjected to some type of physical, emotional, sexual or economic abuse. It is for this reason that many organizations worldwide are organizing campaigns against domestic violence. Faced with this reality, we cannot be left out, so we have prepared a list of symptoms or warning calls to which we as a society must be attentive:

  • Silent victims. The first thing you should know is that many people who are victims of violence feel guilty about it and therefore feel ashamed to tell it, however in many cases it is possible to show on a physical level: wounds, traces of blows, bruises, etc. ., and when asked for these details, they usually tell a story that disagrees with the reality of the injuries.

  • Erratic behavior. It can also be noted on a psychological level, that those who suffer from it present stress, anxiety, anguish, confusion, depression and / or agitation.

  • Social isolation. As a consequence of the aforementioned symptoms, they begin to stop visiting their social circle, become isolated and have little or no presence in family activities in which they previously actively participated. This occurs because the dynamic between the abuser and the victim has mechanisms for its perpetuation, even going so far as to justify violence by both parties. This is the main reason why family members, friends, and often even the victim herself, are not able to diagnose or perceive violence.

  • Evasive looks. Victims when conversing avoid eye contact, startle at the slightest noise, look uneasily at the door and are reluctant to answer questions that are personal or that involve their partner or aggressor, as this can leave them in evidence of the situation they are facing . In most cases the victims are never alone, the aggressors always look for a way to be present in the interactions and conversations they can have with their environment. They may even prohibit their victim from working, going out to do everyday things like shopping, or having phone conversations.

  • Decay of health. They also begin to make complaints about their health. They say they have frequent migraines, in women there are spontaneous abortions, they suffer from insomnia and they also begin to present sexual dysfunctions, derived from post-traumatic stress.

  • Depression. They are sad, downcast and seem to have no reason to be happy.

If after reading this article you discover that someone close to you is experiencing domestic violence, we recommend that you create a relaxed and neutral environment where you can have a relaxed conversation with the person, you can use questions that the victim does not feel invasive, such as: how are they doing? Things with your family? Do you have a problem with your husband or children? Does your husband control your outings or money? If the answers are yes, you should not judge the victim for having gone through this process in silence. On the contrary, you must understand and explain that there are no immediate solutions for the situation you are facing, but that in each country there are organizations dedicated to upholding the rights of people and that can provide psychological support to achieve the lost emotional balance. And finally, you must reinforce the option of seeking support and breaking the silence as the first step to free yourself from an abusive relationship, thus starting a totally new life.
