Obese Children: How To Help Them Lose Weight

If you have a child in the family with obesity problems, this article is for you.

All my life I have been overweight. When I was a teenager I didn’t have a lot of extra pounds but it was enough to cause problems for me. I felt bad and different: at that time there were no nice clothes for the “chubby ones” and I didn’t like being forbidden to eat tasty things. In the summer I didn’t enjoy the water because I was ashamed of my body. When I had a party, I suffered because I couldn’t put on the clothes I liked. But, despite my suffering, I must admit that I was a bit rebellious: when my mother tried to help me, she just wouldn’t let her, it was hard for me to recognize my problem. In addition, my grandmother prepared delicious things for me all the time and that also worked against me.

So now that I am a mother, I know how difficult it can be to have a child with extra pounds and to help him if you do not have the right tools.

In overweight people, especially in children and adolescents, there is a lot of rebellion, denial and sadness when not being able to perform certain activities or not being like others. On the other hand, the food they sell at school makes you fat and is unhealthy, temptation appears everywhere. Working together is required for obesity treatment to be successful. So if your child is overweight, take a look at these tips from someone who continues to fight obesity on a daily basis, as this is a job for life.

1. Do not prohibit anything

When something is forbidden to us, that generates the opposite effect on us: we want it even more. Excessive control is useless. It is better to talk, that the person understands why it is important to take care of yourself and avoid certain foods. Seek that your child makes an awareness in order to act confidently and firmly on his own.

2. Don’t tempt him

While he has to learn to control himself, try not to eat unhealthy things in front of him, at least until he has the willpower to say “no.” Talk to the rest of your family, ask them not to insist when he decides not to eat something that makes him fat and to try to cook and offer him healthy food.

3. Consult a specialist

Encourage him to find value in consulting the doctor. Accompany him. Find out if there are therapeutic groups in your city that address the problem of obesity in a comprehensive way: with nutritionists, gymnastics classes and psychological support groups. These groups are wonderful, you will find boys and girls your age with the same problems and concerns. Remember that my advice is from the point of view of those who suffer from this problem, but psychologists and doctors dedicated to the treatment of obesity have the specific knowledge necessary to help us overcome the difficulties that arise one by one. In my case, seeking professional help was the best way to be successful.

4. Talk

Talk a lot about the benefits of losing weight. Look at examples of people who have managed to shed the extra pounds. Explain that he is worth a lot as a person, that not everything depends on being thin but that if he loses weight he will feel much better and he will be able to have a fuller life. Try to keep his self-esteem at a good level.

5. Cook for him

Look for delicious and non-fattening recipes. Is this possible? Of course! You will be surprised to find on the internet a large number of delicious dishes that are dietary. Thus, the regimen to lose weight will not be so difficult. What’s more, if you get your whole family used to eating healthy, it will be easier for your child to accept an adequate diet to lose weight.

6. Get active together

Find an enjoyable physical activity to do. Dance and sports are excellent options. This way your child will stay healthy, will have less anxiety and will be able to lose weight more quickly.

Obesity is a disease, it is important that we make ourselves aware of it. There is a lot to do, so be patient and remember that being overweight can also be avoided. Read these important recommendations from the World Health Organization to fight this terrible epidemic.

Overweight people tend to eat when we are bored, happy, distressed, excited, that is, food is always present in our life. Therefore, as a last tip, guide your child to look for activities that they may like and entertain healthily. Sports, art, learning a musical instrument will be excellent options. That way, the food will take a back seat.
