At some point the children will return to the classroom, and as parents we must be attentive to follow a series of special recommendations if we want to take care of the health of our children.
Just over a hundred years ago, the world experienced the last great pandemic of which there is memory and records, a contagion of influenza, also known as “The Spanish flu.”
In 1918, this disease devastated humanity, as an estimated 50 million people died. This contagion was so great because it occurred during the First World War and thousands of soldiers lived together in small spaces, “elbow to elbow”, daily and last but not least, they traveled from one military camp to another, spreading the virus everywhere.
To this must be added that the governments of that time did not communicate the disease, their care and precautions to the troops “so as not to discourage or worry them”, which caused there to be a much stronger and more severe contagion in what today we call “the second wave ”, that is, after the first outbreak, when a second more aggressive and deadly comes.
In 1918, the world scientific community did not have much information about the virus, there were no laboratory tests, antibiotic vaccines or mass media to provide information to people and the most that could be done was to promote hygiene habits such as: washing hands frequently, wearing face masks in public and closing theaters and schools.
It was known that a new pandemic would reach humanity
From then on, various centers and institutions for the prevention and control of diseases arose because it was known that, sooner or later, a new pandemic would appear.
And it was our turn to live it, but this time, with much greater knowledge about viruses and their behavior, with medicines, respirators and more medical supplies to be able to face this contagion.
Although contagion remains a great health hazard, we can do more to take care of ourselves today than in the past.
Keep us alert
Today we know that, after this period of lockdownOne or two more waves of contagion will come, for which we must be very alert, never let down our guard and in particular, in what has to do with returning to normal activities, including school.
If you are a mother with children of basic education age, surely you are worried about the so famous, necessary and dreaded back to school.
Each country, including each state, province or municipality, distinguishes its own recommendations for returning to life after COVID-19
The gradual return
So far, most governments have mwitnessed a gradual return andn all productive activities leaving Education for the end, especially in the basic education grades. College students will be the first to return.
This is done in order to protect children more and better because, finally, they are the most valuable of humanity.
Hygiene measures forever
This part and we must all understand and accept it, if before the coronavirus you were a person who did not wash their hands regularly, now it can no longer be the same. Hygiene measures such as frequent hand washing, not touching the face, avoiding the handshake, and coughing at the angle of the elbow, should now be normal.
Now that the children are at home, take the opportunity to insist on these practices, in this way when they return to school, they will have them mastered.
The number of students per classroom and social distancing
One of the first challenges that schools are facing has to do with social distancing among children, because for them this is very complex, they want to play, move and of course, play with their friends.
So imagine a group of 20 or even 30 students in a classroom, how to ensure that they do not touch?
Your child’s school must somehow ensure that this happens to prevent the school from becoming a center of infection.
How can it be done?
The voluntary return
In some places, the idea of “voluntary return” is beginning to be used; This means that if you decide, you will send your child to school or not. We understand that although there are families who can keep their children at home for longer because there is an adult with them caring for them, but in other cases, it is not an option because the parents will have to return to work and there will be no one with whom to leave the minors.
Half online and half in person
Considering that there will be children who can return and others who cannot, for many schools it is anticipated that teachers will have to teach both in school and online. Under what formats or in what way? There is no single way to do it because each community and family have their own challenges, from having a computer at home, connectivity or other elements to receiving the class from a distance or even going to school.
Each region and even school will make decisions or make known the minimum parameters so that each child can continue with their education. This measure can help make healthy distance work at school. Your child’s school will certainly have a good proposal for them.
Back to school for children under 6 years
This is an issue that is generating a lot of controversy, because although in China children are much more disciplined in terms of their behavior before the age of 6, in other cultures things may not work that way.
Spain and France have promoted that children under the age of six simply do not return to school in person.
Cleaning and disinfection of facilities
This is another great challenge for schools, keeping the school clean and sanitized. We are already seeing schools where children have transparent acrylic screens on their benches to avoid contact with their classmates or the use of transparent masks to avoid the exchange of fluids, but beyond this, there is constantly cleaning the objects of common use such as knobs, tables, chairs, pencils or even books.
Not to mention school lunch time! It is very possible that this time is avoided or totally transformed.
What should you do as a mom?
First, teach your children hygiene and personal care practices inside and outside the home.
Second, strengthen your immune system through diet and exercise and of course, with a good attitude and emotional tranquility.
Third, stay in communication with the school and participate in a collaborative way for the common good of the entire educational community, follow the instructions and leave the criticism for another time.
Health care is a social issue, a responsibility that we must face as a human group because this is the only way to preserve our lives.
